The Botany Department was created in 1887. Its most prominent collection of specimens, the Rocky Mountain Herbarium, was started in 1893. The Botany Department offered bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees, and encouraged students to study topics such as botany, mycology, zoology, agriculture, molecular biology, wildlife management, and general biology. Nelson (1859-1952), a noted botanist of the rocky mountain states, was a faculty member of the University of Wyoming from 1886-1942. Born in Iowa and attending schools in Missouri, he was hired as one of the first faculty members of the University of Wyoming.
